Kolkata : India’s Football hub Kolkata is all set to host India vs Russia Women’s Football following conclusion of historic Brazil and Uruguay friendly encounters.
AIFF has the possibility of organising two friendlies matches between India vs Russia on October 8 and October 11. Before that, Indian Men’s team will face Brazil and Uruguay on 3 and 6 October respectively at Kolkata’s iconic Yuva Bharati Kriangan. Then the Blue Tigresses who’re currently ranked 69th , will face Russia for 2 friendlies.
To make sure that they have everything ready for the tough task ahead, the India team will officially commence their training camp from September 16.
India, ranked 69th in the world, has had a packed calendar in 2026, playing in the AFC Asian Cup in Australia, followed by the FIFA Series in Kenya. The Blue Tigresses made a group-stage exit from the Asian Cup losing to Japan, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam, while they beat Malawi 3-2 in the FIFA Series Third Place Playoff to finish third.
In SAFF 2026 championship, India defeated Bangladesh and lifted the title after seven years in an undefeated run. This was Blue Tigresses 6th Women’s SAFF Title.
“The team management was looking to play higher-ranked sides for more ranking points after the SAFF title. Accordingly, Russia (ranked 27th) looked like a good fit,” a source told.
“The process of inviting them has been in the works for some time now. But the approval from UEFA and FIFA is pending, only after which it will be confirmed.”
The October window runs between October 5 and 13, with India playing two matches, likely against the Russians.
Russia will be the second-highest ranked opponent for India this year, with the 2011 Women’s World Cup winner Japan topping that list.
As head coach, Crispin Chettri had guided India to beat higher-ranked Thailand and earn a spot in the Asian Cup.
With the tactician back in charge after the continental tournament, the team won the SAFF Championship, and October would present an opportunity to gauge how far the team has progressed under him, especially against higher-ranked teams.
