Panjim: Juan Ferrando’s ATK Mohun Bagan claimed a 3-1 win over Khalid Jamil’s NorthEast United FC in the Indian Super League 2021-22 at Fatorda Stadium on Saturday.

Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh continued to impress for the Mariners, as they made it on to the score sheet  with Euro 2020 fame, Joni Kauko. Although, V.P Suhair did put the Highlanders ahead at initially, but it went in vain.

The Mariners had a chance as early as the 15th minute to go up through  Manvir, but the forward just failed to connect. While, Suhair put the Highlanders ahead in the 17th minute, when Marcelo Pereira put a loose ball infront of him.

The Kolkata giants found the equalizer shortly after through  Kauko. The midfielder slotted past a beautiful goal from outside the box, on being fed by Colaco himself. The goal was an amazing one, justifying the very reason Kauko was brought in. The two players combine once again with reversed roles, as Colaco striked a powerful shot putting ATK Mohun Bagan in the lead in the 45th minute.

Coming back from the break, it took the Mariners only seven minutes to double their lead. Manvir recieved a ball intercepted by Colaco, and swiftly put it away from Subhashish Roy’s reach in the 52nd minute.

Despite repeated efforts, NEUFC failed to make any more goalmouth action. In the final quarters of the game, coach Jamil brought in Deshorn Brown to bolster the attack, but the forward failed to make any instant impact. The absence of Federico Gallego was felt, even throughout the season, as the Highlanders  were numerically termed out of the top four race.

With the win, ATK Mohun Bagan sit at the second position of the ISL table with 26 points while NEUFC move to the 11th. Juan Ferrando’s men will be seen in action against FC Goa on February 15th in an attempt to reach the top spot.
