Sao Paulo: Former Brazilian footballer Pelé has still been in intensive care on Friday as he recovered from surgery to remove a tumor from his colon’s right side.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, 80, was recovering “in a satisfactory manner,” at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, according to a hospital statement. He is still in critical care.

The hospital also said Pelé is “awake, actively talking and keeing his vital signs in normality.”

Pelé was due to be moved to a regular room on Tuesday, according to the earlier statement of the hospital authority.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian legend shared an update on his health on social media, stating that he is “recovering well.” “Every day I feel a little better,” the three-time World Cup champion wrote on Instagram.

He also expressed his “affection, love, and prayers” to Brazilian musician Roberto Carlos, whose son Dudu Braga died on Wednesday at the age of 52 following a battle with cancer.

He had an apparent tumor on the right side of his colon, which was removed through surgery at Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital on Tuesday (September 7). After the tumor was diagnosed, he went to the hospital for routine checks over the last week. The tumor was detected during standard cardiovascular and laboratory checks, according to the hospital statement.

Pelé was Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals until Argentina player Lionel Messi surpassed his record in the World Cup 2020 qualifier match against Bolivia in Buenos Aires on Thursday. Brazilian legend won three World Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
