Delhi : Punjab Super Kings (PBSK) scripted history by registering the highest successful run chase in IPL history, defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by 6 wickets in the 35th match of the IPL 2026 season. Chasing a mammoth 265, PBSK comfortably achieved the target with seven balls to spare at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on 25 April, Saturday. The total was the highest of the 2026 season so far.

The match began with DC won the toss and elected to bat first . The innings was totally highlighted by an electrifying knock from KL Rahul, who remained unbeaten on 152 off 67 balls, with a stunning 16 fours and 9 sixes at a strike rate of 226.86. With that, Rahul produced a historic knock for Delhi Capitals, becoming the first Indian batter to score 150 in the IPL, as he hammered an unbeaten 152 against Punjab Kings in Delhi. The innings now stands as the third-highest individual score in the history of the tournament, behind only Chris Gayle’s 175* and Brendon McCullum’s 158. After initial wickets fell, Nitish Rana came to bat, and soon both found the perfect coordination. Together, the duo put on a stunning exhibition of batting. The pair added 220 runs for the second wicket, the highest partnership in Delhi Capitals’ history and the second-highest for any wicket in the IPL, only behind AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli’s 229-run stand in 2016. Rana scored a brilliant 91 off 44 balls, and by the end of 20 overs, DC produced a mammoth 264/2, which looked like a match-winning total. PBSK bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs. Shashank Singh also dropped a crucial catch of Rahul early in his innings when he was on 19, which proved to be a massive mistake.

To chase this mammoth total, PBSK needed an aggressive and fearless start. Arya and Prabhsimran Singh took DC’s bowlers to the cleaners, racing to 100 in just 5.2 overs. What followed was one of the most explosive powerplay displays in IPL history, the second-fastest team hundred in IPL history. Only Sunrisers Hyderabad have gone quicker, reaching the mark in 5 overs against Delhi at the same venue in 2024. Prabhsimran Singh led the charge with an incredible 76 off just 26 balls, bringing up his fifty in only 18 balls. Priyansh Arya complemented him with another excellent innings, scoring a rapid 43 off 17 balls. The duo powered PBSK to 116/0 by the end of the powerplay. The breakthrough finally came in the 6.5th over when Axar Patel dismissed Arya, followed by two quick wickets in a short span. However, due to the aggressive start, PBSK had already created immense pressure on the DC bowlers. Boundaries continued to flow as PBSK capitalised on anything loose, while DC struggled to regain control. Nehal Wadhera and skipper Shreyas Iyer then built a solid 56-run partnership. Iyer played a magnificent unbeaten knock of 71 off 36 balls, guiding the team with composure. Eventually, PBSK crossed the finishing line at 265/4 in 18.5 overs, sealing a historic victory with seven balls to spare. In the process, they broke their own record for the highest successful run chase in IPL history, having previously chased down 261 against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.

Despite posting such a huge total, DC were defeated, with Karun Nair missing two crucial chances to dismissed Iyer. Their inability to hold onto catches and control the run flow proved costly.

During the second innings, Delhi Capitals pacer Lungi Ngidi suffered a serious head injury while attempting to take a catch of Priyansh Arya. The incident occurred in the third over when Arya played a shot that went high towards mid-off. Ngidi ran back but misjudged the catch and fell awkwardly, hitting the back of his head hard on the ground. An ambulance was brought onto the field as doctors and physios attended to him before he was quickly taken to the hospital. The IPL later confirmed that Ngidi is stable. After experiencing headache and neck pain, the decision to hospitalise him was precautionary and protocol-driven. The most important update was that Ngidi is stable and expected to return soon.

With this win, PBSK remain unbeaten, continuing their dominant run in the tournament.
