KOLKATA, APRIL4,2026: Delhi Capitals won by 6 wickets (with 11 balls left) against Mumbai Indians (MI) with a cracking knock by Sameer Rizvi in their first home and season’s 8th match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, at 3:30 PM.
DC and MI both started their campaign this season with wins (MI against KKR and DC against LSG). In today’s match, the captain Hardik Pandya did not play due to unfitness. In his place, the T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav led the team in the match. Delhi continued with their same playing XI for today’s match, but MI changed three players from the previous match—Hardik Pandya, Trent Boult, and Allah Ghazanfar were replaced by Deepak Chahar, Corbin Bosch, and Mitchell Santner.
The match began with DC winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. The MI openers, who played outstandingly in the previous match, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, opened the innings, but Rickelton got out early in the 3rd over when Mukesh Kumar came to bowl after scoring 9 runs off 11 balls (c Axar Patel b Mukesh Kumar). Then Tilak Varma came to bat at No. 3 and got out for a duck (0 in 2 balls) in the same over—caught and bowled by Mukesh Kumar. It was a successful over for DC. The captain for today’s match came in at No. 4. Then Rohit Sharma got dismissed by the captain of DC, Axar Patel (c Nitish Rana b Axar Patel), after scoring 35 in 26 balls. Axar has dismissed Rohit many times before. Then Sherfane Rutherford came and also got out after scoring 5 runs in 7 balls. Then Naman Dhir came and built a steady partnership with Suryakumar Yadav, which was needed at that time and also helped MI reach a competitive total for DC to chase. Surya played well and made a half-century but was then dismissed LBW by Lungi Ngidi. Mitchell Santner came in after that. Naman Dhir tried to continue the momentum, but after some time he also got out (c Tristan Stubbs b T. Natarajan). Corbin Bosch and M. Santner ended the innings at 162/6 after 20 overs. In the previous match, MI chased 221 easily, but in front of DC’s bowling lineup they only managed 162. Their bowling unit did a great job in their first match and continued the same form, especially Mukesh Kumar, who took two major early wickets, stopping MI from scoring big runs, giving only 26 runs in 3 overs and taking 2 wickets.
The second innings started with KL Rahul and P. Nissanka as the openers of DC. For bowling, Deepak came to bowl early and took the wicket of Rahul on the 4th ball. Rahul scored only 1 run in 3 balls (c Ryan Rickelton b Deepak Chahar). Rahul is not looking in his usual form; in the previous match he also got out for a duck on his very first ball. At No. 3, Nitish Rana came to bat but got run out for a duck by Jasprit Bumrah, making it 7/2 in 2 overs. At this time, MI created strong pressure on DC. Then at No. 4, Sameer Rizvi came as an impact player. The young player, who also did his job fantastically in the first match and became Man of the Match, again delivered brilliantly. Rizvi and Nissanka built a great partnership of 66 runs, which helped DC come out of pressure. P. Nissanka played well and scored 44 runs in 30 balls but got out (c Mayank Markande b Mitchell Santner). Then D. Miller came in. S. Rizvi played electrifyingly and took the game away from MI single-handedly with a beautiful knock of 90 runs in 51 balls. He stood tall between MI and DC and became the Man of the Match of today’s game. However, he got out without scoring a century (c Tilak Varma b Corbin Bosch). After Rizvi got out, DC needed 12 runs in 23 balls. D. Miller and T. Stubbs finished the match, scoring 21 in 18 balls and 3 runs in 4 balls respectively. The match ended in 18.1 overs. The MI bowlers did a good job, especially Bumrah, who bowled 4 overs and conceded only 21 runs. The bowlers of DC showed dominance in the first innings against the powerful batting lineup of MI, and Rizvi did the rest of the job in the second innings.
With this win, DC went to the first position on the table, collecting 4 points. DC will face GT in the next match on 8th April at their home ground, while MI will face RR next Tuesday, 7th April, in Guwahati. MI has gone slightly off track after this loss—how they bounce back in the next match will be interesting, and how DC continues their great form in the rest of the league will also be exciting to watch.
