KOLKATA, APRIL 13, 2026: Royal Challengers Bengaluru registered a commanding 18-run victory over Mumbai Indians in the high-voltage rivalry match (Match 20 of IPL 2026) at Wankhede Stadium. Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted a mammoth 240/4, powered by an explosive opening stand and a blistering half-century from captain Rajat Patidar, returning to winning ways in a dominant fashion after their previous defeat.
The rivalry clash began with Mumbai Indians winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. RCB opened with Phil Salt and Virat Kohli, who produced a spectacular performance in the powerplay. The powerplay ended with RCB at 71 without loss. Salt smashed 78 off just 36 deliveries, including 6 fours and 6 sixes, and was named Player of the Match. Virat Kohli anchored the innings from the other end with a composed 50 off 38 balls, registering his 65th IPL half-century. The duo built a 120-run partnership that MI bowlers struggled to break. At 10.5 overs, Shardul Thakur finally provided the breakthrough by dismissing Salt at a crucial moment, breaking the dangerous partnership. After that, the RCB skipper accelerated aggressively, scoring a blazing 53 off 20 balls. Virat Kohli was dismissed after his half-century (c Suryakumar Yadav b Hardik Pandya). Tim David then came in and, along with Patidar, pushed the score forward before Patidar was dismissed for 53 off 20 balls (c Tilak Varma b Mitchell Santner). At that stage, RCB were 194/3 in 15.6 overs. Jitesh Sharma came in next but was dismissed early for 10 off 9 balls (lbw b Trent Boult). Tim David remained unbeaten with a fluent 34 off 16 balls, while Romario Shepherd contributed a steady 2 off 2 balls not out, finishing RCB’s innings at a massive 240/4. MI bowlers were highly expensive and were unable to contain the explosive RCB batting attack.
To chase this massive run, MI needed a strong start but suffered an early setback when Rohit Sharma was forced to retire hurt on 19 off 13 balls due to a hamstring issue. Suryakumar Yadav and Ryan Rickelton tried to keep up with the required run rate, but against Suyash Sharma, Rickelton was dismissed after scoring 37 off 22 balls. Tilak Varma then fell cheaply for 1 off 3 balls in the same over, again to Suyash Sharma. Captain Hardik Pandya came in and, along with Suryakumar, tried to reduce the mounting pressure, but the required run rate kept climbing. In the middle overs, there was a high-stakes phase featuring the Pandya brothers’ involvement, and Krunal Pandya picked up a key wicket by dismissing Suryakumar Yadav after his 33 off 22 balls. Wickets continued to fall in quick succession: Hardik Pandya scored 40 off 22 balls before being dismissed by Jacob Duffy, and Naman Dhir made 1 off 2 balls (c Rajat Patidar b Rasikh Salam). At that stage, Sherfane Rutherford launched a brilliant counterattack, scoring a fighting 71 off 31 balls with 9 sixes. His powerful knock reduced the margin of defeat, but MI eventually finished at 222/5 after 20 overs.
RCB delivered an outstanding performance in both batting and bowling departments. With this dominant victory over MI, RCB earned 2 points and moved to 3rd position on the table, while MI suffered another loss and remained in 8th position. RCB will face Lucknow Super Giants on 15 April, and MI will face Punjab Kings on 16 April. It will be interesting to see how MI make a strong bounce back after this setback.
