DeMumbai: In an Indian Premier League match on Monday, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Mumbai Indians by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium despite a sensational display from Jasprit Bumrah. After being called into action, Jasprit Bumrah eventually rose to the occasion with a five-wicket haul to reduce KKR to 165 for nine. He grabbed two wickets in his second over, and three in his third, and only let up one run in the innings’ last over. Before Monday, Bumrah’s greatest IPL bowling performance was 4 for 14 in 2020.

KKR’s batsmen were Venkatesh Iyer (43 off 24 balls) and Nitish Rana (43 off 26 balls). MI were bowled out for 113 in 17.3 overs, failing to chase down the score. Ishan Kishan led MI with 51 points off 43 shots. Pat Cummins took three wickets and gave up 22 runs.

Mumbai Indians were chasing 166 for their third consecutive win of the season, but they got off to a bad start. The first player to go for MI was Rohit Sharma, who has struggled with the bat in this year’s IPL. A vociferous demand from KKR for a catch behind the wickets off Tim Southee was denied by the umpire.

Shreyas Iyer chose the DRS, and several spikes convinced third umpire Rohit that the ball had been nicked. However, after KKR’s review was upheld, TV replays revealed a clear space between bat and ball, and Rohit Sharma walked off the field unhappy.

For KKR, Andre Russell struggled with the bat, but he kept them in the game with two wickets in his first two overs.

As MI sank deeper into difficulties, Russell took Tilak Varma for 6 and then Ramandeep Singh for 12 off 16.

Ishan Kishan missed short on a half-century against Gujarat Titans, but he got his third fifty of the season on Monday when he hammered Sunil Narine for a six. Shreyas Iyer dropped Kieron Pollard for eight runs in the same over, and KKR will soon have the opportunity to further hurt MI.

Pat Cummins removed Ishan Kishan, Daniel Sams, and M Ashwin in his third over. This over threatened to turn the contest on its head again, similar to Jasprit Bumrah’s 3-wicket over.

The pursuit was only becoming tight since Mumbai Indians’ Kieron Pollard was still in the midst. Pollard has had a bad season with the bat, but in chases like this, one never writes him out.

KKR, on the other hand, kept chipping away, and Kumar Kartikeya’s run-out in the 17th over made it much more difficult for MI.

KKR had surged to victory by 52 runs, with two back-to-back run-outs, including Kieron Pollard’s.

Brief Scores:

Kolkata Knight Riders: 165/9 in 20 overs (Venkatesh Iyer 43, Nitish Rana 43; Jasprit Bumrah 5/10).

Mumbai Indians: 113 all out in 17.3 overs (Ishan Kishan 51; Pat Cummins 3/22).
