IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians overpower lacklustre Rajasthan Royals

New Delhi: After tasting two straight defeats, Mumbai Indians made a stunning comeback clinching a seven-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League on Sunday (April 29).

Rohit Sharma’s side chased down a target of 172 at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium with nine deliveries to spare after Sanju Samson (42) and Jos Buttler (41) sent Rajasthan Royals to 171/4 in 20 overs. Mumbai still hold fifth place after the victory almost halfway down the season.

Earlier, Sanju Samson played captain’s knock of 45 from 27 balls to power Rajasthan innings after Buttler and teenager Yashasvi Jaiswal gave them a good start. The Englishman got dismissed after the powerplay playing a handy knock while Jaiswal played the deputy role with a breezy 20-ball 32.

However, a 57 run stand between skipper Samson and Shivam Dube (35) helped the Royals past the 170-run mark. Mumbai bowlers played their part as well restricting their opponents though they did get hammered in the death overs.

In reply, Quinton de Kock kept Mumbai in the hunt despite the early loss of Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav failed to build on his good start falling to Chris Morris. De Kock though played an unbeaten 50-ball 70 anchoring the innings alongside Krunal Pandya (39) piling on a 63-run stand to close the gap.

Despite the Rajasthan bowlers keeping it through the mid-phase of the game dragging the game to the wire, a late flourish from Kieron Pollard (16) helped Mumbai home in 18.3 overs. Rajasthan’s bowling was quite good with Morris (2/33) and Mustafizur Rahman (1/37) sharing the wickets until they lost their way in the final overs.

Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 172/3 in 18.3 overs (Quinton de Kock 70 not out, Krunal Pandya 39; Chris Morris 2/33) beat Rajasthan Royals 171/4 in 20 overs (Sanju Samson 42, Jos Buttler 41; Rahul Chahar 2/33) by seven wickets.
