IPL 2020: Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad to go on top

Sharjah: Defending champions Mumbai Indians put on a clinical display on Sunday (October 4) in the first game of the day to pick up their third win of the campaign and temporarily surge to the top spot. Chasing 209 for victory, SRH became the first team this season to not breach the 200-run mark at his high-scoring venue as they were restricted to 174/7.

It was a collective effort. Quinton de Kock (67) shrugged off his poor form and capitalised on a reprieve provided by Manish Pandey to register his first fifty of the season. Suryakumar Yadav (27) looked in glorious touch in the powerplay playing some delightful strokes but once again failed to capitalise on his great start as he found the fielder at short fine leg off a delivery that was going down the leg side.

The dangerous middle order of Ishan Kishan (31), KieronPollard (25 not out) and Hardik Pandya (28) combined to hit seven sixes and just when it appeared like Mumbai would fall short of 200, Krunal Pandya came in and smacked two fours and two sixes off the four deliveries he faced to carry them to 208. MI could have posted a lot more than 208 if not for another superb display of death bowling by T Natarajan.

The impressive pacer, who has already bowled the most number of yorkers this season, was spot on with his lengths once again denying both Pollard and Hardik on numerous occasions. He ended up conceding only 29 runs in his spell and was backed up by Rashid Khan earlier.

In reply, SRH lost Jonny Bairstow (25) early but a 60-run partnership between skipper David Warner (60) and Pandey kept the required run-rate in check at almost 10 runs per over. The Orange Army got a setback when they lost a set Pandey and Kane Williamson in quick successions of the bowling off James Pattinson (2/29) and Trent Boult (2/28) respectively.

Youngsters Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma whose heroics in the previous matches have helped SRH in their wins failed miserably. Although Warner held onto one end but his dismissal in the 16th over dashed all hopes for SRH for a win. For Mumbai Jasprit Bumrah also took two wickets.

Brief scores: Mumbai Indians 208/5 in 20 overs (Quinton de Kock 67, Ishan Kishan 31; Sandeep Sharma 2/41) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 174/7 in 20 overs (David Warner 60, Manish Pandey 30; Trent Boult 2/28, James Pattinson 2/29) by 34 runs
