Melbourne: Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath is convinced that the Shubman Gill belonged to international cricket. The former Australia pacer was all praise for Gill as he recalled how the batsman impressed him with his batting display during the third ODI at Sydney.

The 21-year-old also impressed the legendary Australian after his knock on the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The Punjab lad showed his class with the bat opening the innings with Mayank Agarwal. Coming into the side replacing Prithvi Shaw, Gill scored 45 runs off 65 deliveries before being dismissed by Pat Cummins. His knock made Gill the third-highest Indian run-scorer on Test debut for India in Australia.

Agarwal stands on top of the list with 76 on debut Down Under in 2018. Former Indian cricketer Dattu Phadkar is second, who had scored 51 runs on his debut in Sydney in December 1947.

“When I saw him the other day in the ODI, I thought he had a good technique, he looked like he belonged to international cricket,” McGrath said. “It was a pretty tough introduction to Test cricket there with the way Starc and Cummins were bowling, they (the batsmen) were playing and missing, there was that one edge that Labuschagne put down, but apart from that he looked pretty solid,” he added.
