FINA bans swimming cap specially designed for diverse hair types

Lausanne: The International Swimming Federation (FINA) had put a ban on the caps made for ‘diverse hair types’ at the Tokyo Olympics. According to FINA, the caps did not fit ‘the natural form of the head’. The apex body also stated that the athletes at the Tokyo Olympics never used, neither require caps of such size and configuration.

The swimming caps were designed specifically for black swimmers with longer, thicker and more voluminous hair by a UK-based company — Soul Caps. Alice Dearing, who became the first black female swimmer to represent Team GB at the Olympics last week, previously partnered with Soul Caps.

The FINA would conduct a review of the use of ‘soul caps’ and other similar products and also deemed them ‘unsuitable’ — a decision that had been widely condemned by black athletes and activists alike.

Toks Ahmed, the co-founder of Soul Cap, stated that FINA’s decision to ban these swim caps could ‘discourage many younger athletes from pursuing the sport as they progress through local, county, and national competitive swimming’.

Commenting on such a decision, Danielle Obe, the founding member of the Black Swimming Association, told Guardian the ruling underlined the inherent systemic and institutional inequalities around the sport. “We believe that it confirms a lack of diversity in (the sport),” she said. “Aquatic swimming must do better.”

Following widespread criticism, FINA stated on Friday stating that it is reconsidering its ban on the Soul Cap, ‘recognising the importance of inclusivity and representation’. FINA had previously expressed concerns about whether the extended shape of these swim caps could confer an aquadynamic advantage by disrupting water flow.

“There is no restriction on ‘Soul Cap’ swim caps for recreational and teaching purposes. FINA appreciates the efforts of ‘Soul Cap’ and other suppliers to ensure everyone has the chance to enjoy the water. FINA will also speak with the manufacturer of the ‘Soul Cap’ about utilising their products through the FINA Development Centres,” an official statement read.
