Tokyo: Canada bagged their first-ever women’s football gold medal at the Olympics beating Sweden via penalty shootout in a dramatic final. Sweden took the lead when Stina Blackstenius scored but Jessie Fleming equalised for Canada from a spot-kick.

However, it was the Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe, who came out shinning during the shootout making two saves and kept Canada in the game and won 3-2. Canada displayed a strong defensive play all throughout the tournament only conceding four goals in six matches.

The Canadian backline of Canada Vanessa Gilles, Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence delivered yet again making some crucial interceptions in the final. The United States won the bronze medal.
