Brighton: Chelsea kickstarted their 2020-21 Premier League campaign with a 3-1 away win at Brighton. Jorginho, James Reece and Kurt Zouma were on the scoresheet for the Londoners at the Amex stadium. The audacious signings scream for an audacious performance, which to some extent Chelsea couldn’t showcase in spite of the convincing scoreline.

The big signings that Chelsea made during the ongoing transfer window, requires them to reflect the same on the scoreline. They spend a humongous amount in spite of the pandemic and had one of their most successful transfer windows as they signed the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva and Hakim Ziyech.

Werner was excellent, his presence was felt all throughout the game like a thorn that poked Brighton. Never for once did his energy dip, as kept trying to win the ball back. He was rewarded by winning the penalty in the 23rd minute which was converted by Jorginho putting Frank Lampard’s men ahead of Brighton.

The celebration, however, was shortlived as Brighton equalised owing to a Kepa Arrizabalaga howler. Leandro Tossard tucked in the ball which sneaked under Kepa’s arm finding the back of the net on 54 minutes.

Two minutes later, the Blues were back in the lead with a stunner from Reece, smashing a rocket into the top corner. Lewis Dunk missed a chance to equalise for Seagulls. Finally, Zouma sealed the match for Blues in the 66th minute.

In spite of the scoreline, the performance wasn’t quite as it was expected from Chelsea. Ruben Loftus Cheek had a pretty dreadful game and Kai Havertz was pretty quiet too. Havertz did get very little time to practice with the team and neither played any pre-season games. In the end, Lampard’s men got the job done and secured their first win of the season.
