New Delhi : Former legendary Indian skipper & BCCI President Sourav Ganguly threw light on opening combo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup starting from June 2 at West Indies and USA.

Virat Kohli usually Bats at Number 3 for India and earned his legacy mainly in that position . However, he opens the Batting for his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru & has scored most runs (379) for his franchise this season, also holding the orange cap in IPL 2024.

Whereas, Rohit Sharma has been opening for the nation for 11 years. He also opens at Mumbai Indians and has scored piles of runs in this year’s IPL, which includes a century.

While, Rohit is certain to open for India, there are other genuine openers that might get picked up in the squad and playing 11 like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, who also have scored tons of runs in recent past in that position. However, both of them are having a sluggish IPL season.

This is where a scope for Kohli to open the innings with the Indian captain comes up.

The duo has also opened during 2021 home series against England and has shown good results.

“Both Rohit Sharma and Viral Kohli will definitely go to West Indies and USA. It’s a call for selectors whom they will open with but if you ask me personally both Rohit and Virat should open for India in the T20 World Cup,” Ganguly said during Delhi Capitals media day on Monday. With the IPL 2024 already its halfway stage, it’s just a matter of few days that BCCI will be announcing the final 15-member squad for the mega event. The ICC deadline for submission of final squads is May 1.
