Kolkata: East Bengal opener Sreevats Goswami hit the first century of Bengal T20 League as East Bengal beat Calcutta Customs by a handsome 54 runs at Eden Gardens on Monday (November 30).

Customs won the toss and elected to field, a move that backfired big time. The pitch became easy and East Bengal to twist the adage made hay as the sun set on the western gallery. The red-golds made 175/6 in reply to which Customs could manage 121/6.

Sreevats was in imperious form middling the ball right from the start. He picked apart the Customs bowling peppering the field as he hit 12 boundaries and two sixes in his 71 ball 100 that came off the last ball of the innings. Small gems from Ranjot Khaira and Sayan Mandal helped build the highest total of the meet so far.

After the match Sreevats said, “We needed to win this match cause we have lost previous four matches. We were determined to give our best and win this important game. I am happy that my century helped my team win the match. Hopefully we will carry this winning momentum forward and win rest of the matches.”

East Bengal carried the momentum while bowling with Sujit Yadav 3-24 and Akash Pandey 2-12 never letting the Customs batters settle. A late rush from Karan Lal (unbeaten 30 of 26) and Abhilash Semiwal (unbeaten 24 of 21) provided some entertainment but that was that. But with just one win in five games, only time will tell if it was too late.
