Dhaka: Bangladesh T20I captain Mahmudullah Riyad has tested positive for COVID-19, and is set to miss the Pakistan Super League (PSL) playoffs, local media reported.

The 34-year-old all-rounder was roped in by the PSL table-topper Multan Sultans as a replacement of Moeen Ali, and he was supposed to leave Dhaka on November 9. He is also doubtful for the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, which is set to held on November 21 or 22.

Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal were called up for the PSL playoffs as overseas replacements. Tamim is the only Bangladesh cricketer to travel for the tournament and is expected to leave for Pakistan on Tuesday (November 10). The left-hander will join Lahore Qalandars as Chris Lynn’s replacement.

Mahmudullah said that he got tested twice to be sure, but after two positive results, he has self-isolated himself in a separate room at his house.

“I was surprised with a positive result from my Covid test, on November 6. I didn’t have fever or any other symptoms other than a bit of cold. Nothing more than that. I got tested for a second time yesterday, and that also came out as positive. I am now taking rest in a separate room. I am a little worried about my wife and kids. I am seeking everyone’s prayers for quick recovery and for my family’s well-being,” Mahmudullah was quoted as saying to ESPNcricinfo.

“It is disappointing to miss the chance to play in the PSL. It is a competitive tournament. It was a good opportunity to play a couple of matches there. I am now looking forward to getting well soon and try to participate in our Bangabandhu T20 Cup,” he further added.

Earlier, Abu Jayed, Saif Hassan and Mashrafe Mortaza had tested positive for coronavirus and later on recovered. A few cricketers and coaching staff from the U-19 camp had also tested positive for the deadly virus last month.

The 2020 PSL playoffs are expected to be held in the second or third week of November. Earlier this year, the tournament was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
