Jamaica: Former West Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels has retired from professional cricket. Samuels has top-scored in both of their World T20 final victories and last played for West Indies against Bangladesh in December 2018.

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo on Tuesday (November 3), Samuels had informed Cricket West Indies (CWI) about his retirement this year in June, confirmed CWI chief executive Johnny Grave. Samuels has been recently in the news for a wrong cause.

In October, former Australian spinner Shane Warne had criticized Windies right-arm spinner Samuels for passing unpleasant comments on him and England’s medium-pacer Ben Stokes.

Earlier, Samuels in an Instagram story had mistreated both Stokes and Warne and the Windies all-rounder had also boasted of his skin tone. Samuels had also included Stokes’ wife in his comments and that led to a broad indignation over social media.

In the 2012 T20 World Cup final in Colombo, Samuels’ finest knock came in, when he cast a shot with his batting skills on top-ranking bowlers Ajantha Mendis and Lasith Malinga to lead his side a win over Sri Lanka. Across all formats, he scored 11,134 international runs including 17 centuries and headed 152 wickets.

He had also represented several T20 franchises all over the world later in his career, counting on Pune Warriors, Delhi Daredevils in Indian Premier League (IPL), and Melbourne Renegades in Big Bash League (BBL).
