Kolkata : Erling Haaland grabbed two goals as Manchester City started their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win at Porto in their opening group game.
City were in control for long periods of the first half, but failed to find the net, with Diogo Costa making a string of crucial stops. Haaland went closest when he headed wide after a big save from Costa.
The hosts started the second half strongly and forced the visitors onto the back foot, before Rayan Cherki picked out Enzo Fernández, who sent a cross into Haaland’s path. The Norway international headed into an open goal off the post to put City ahead in the 47th minute.
They struggled for the majority of the game without replying, but Porto threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Gianluigi Donnarumma also played a big part in repelling Porto attacks.
Manchester City held on to their lead, with Haaland scoring his second goal of the game in injury time, after Rayan Aït-Nouri played a low cut-back into his path.
City have three points from their opening game of the Champions League group stage, with Haaland’s brace helping to underline his importance to Enzo Maresca’s men.
