London: Tottenham Hotspur has signed 25-year-old Danish defender Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton on a transfer fee of £15 million. Hojbjerg pens a five-year-deal and is also Spurs’ first big signing of the season.

Hojbjerg will a good replacement for the outgoing Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen. In four seasons with Southampton, he has appeared 128 times and bagging five goals. “I wanted to play in a club where I could see myself for many years,” Hojbjerg told Tottenham’s official website.

“Tottenham was just the one. I’m very proud, very happy and excited. I think there’s a fantastic future ahead for the club and I wanted so much to be a part of that.” Spurs had finished sixth in the Premier League this season, which was not their best result after their regular top-four finish in the previous four seasons.

After sacking long term manager Mauricio Pochettino in November last year, Spurs have appointed Jose Mourinho as the team has managed to make the UFEA Europa League cut. This will be Mourinho’s first full season as the club manager and fans are hoping for something big this season.
