Tokyo: India’s campaign in Artistic gymnastics ended on Sunday as Pranati Nayak finished 25th in the qualification round and failed to qualify for the All-Around Final here at Ariake Gymnastics Centre on Sunday. Only the top-eight in the qualification round make the final cut.

Making her Olympics debut, Pranati finished 12th in subdivision 1 after recording a total score of 42.565 over the four categories. Italian Alice D’amato topped the qualification with a total score of 54.199, while home favorite Mai Murakami came second.

The 26-year-old Kolkata girl registered 10.633 in the Floor exercise and completed a perfect vault for a score of 13.466. She then registered a score of 9.033 and 9.433 in the Uneven Bars and Balance Beam categories respectively.

However, it has been reported that Pranati decided not to compete for the second vault indicating that she doesn’t intend to try for a vault final. For a gymnast to qualify in the final one has to compete in two different vaults which are averaged to give a final score.

Earlier in the 2016 Rio Olympics, India’s Dipa Karmakar finished fourth missing a medal by a whisker which is by far the best result for the country in the sport at the Olympics.
