T20 World Cup 2021: Virat Kohli likely to lose ODI captaincy as India on verge of early elimination

New Delhi: Virat Kohli’s ODI captaincy could be jeopardised, and his future as an ODI captain would be discussed when the BCCI leaders and national selectors meet in the coming days, as per PTI reports. In addition, having one player as the white-ball captain rather than splitting captaincy in shorter formats will make more sense.

The probability of outgoing T20 captain Kohli losing his ODI captaincy is high, given that Virat Kohli’s Team India is on the verge of being eliminated early from the T20 World Cup 2021, which is being held in the United Arab Emirates. After losing their Super 12 opener to Pakistan, the Men in Blue were beaten by Kane Williamson-led New Zealand by eight wickets, putting the one-time champions in a difficult position to reach the showcase event’s semi-finals.

Skipper Kohli isn’t having a good time right now. While there was a lot of talk when he announced his decision to leave as T20I captain before of the World Cup, many believed he would go out on a high note and win his first-ever ICC trophy as Team India’s captain. Nonetheless, India’s campaign has been a disaster, to put it mildly.

The report further stated that  India will only play three 50-over games at home this season, all of which will be against the West Indies in February. As a result, the Indian cricket board is working on a two-year master plan for the 2023 World Cup.

It will be intriguing to watch if Kohli will stand down from the 50-over captaincy voluntarily or if he will wait for the BCCI, led by Sourav Ganguly, to ask him to do so. Given the way things are shaping up for India in the T20 World Cup, his days as a leader in shorter formats are likely numbered.

Following the T20 World Cup, India will go through a transition period. As of now, Rohit Sharma appears to be the leading contender for the white-ball captaincy, while Rahul Dravid is all but certain to succeed Ravi Shastri as India’s head coach. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has been in bad form, and Hardik Pandya, whose fitness remains a mystery, are anticipated to be left out of the T20 team against New Zealand.
