Nyon: Simon Kjær and the Denmark medical will be awarded the 2021 UEFA President’s Award for their quick action in saving Christian Eriksen’s life on the field — an incident that shook the entire world and is still afresh in the minds of people.

The incident happened during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland when Eriksen suddenly collapsed at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen just 20 minutes into the clock. Kjaer reacted quickly with the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) before he was attended by the medical team and was stretchered off to the hospital soon.

The immediate response from the Denmark captain and the medical team was vital as any minute lost would have been a threat to the player’s life. Kjaer, not only reacted immediately when his fellow teammate fainted, but also showed great leadership qualities, comforting his family and keeping the team together.

Eriksen is now well towards his road to recovery. “This year, the President’s Award transcends football. It serves as an important and eternal reminder of just how precious life is and puts everything in our lives into the clearest perspective,” UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin said.

He regarded the award recipients as, ‘True heroes of EURO 2020’. “It is indeed a great honour for me to present them with the UEFA President’s Award,” he said.
