Shubman Gill becomes third-highest run-scorer on Test debut for India on Australian soil

Melbourne: Indian opener Shubman Gill who makes his Test debut on Boxing Day (Saturday, December 26) against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). On Sunday, the youngster became the country’s third-highest run-scorer on Test debut in Australia.

The 21 year old showcased a fearless batting against the Australia and scored 45 runs off 65 deliveries on the second day of the Test, before getting dismissed by Pat Cummins. Gill smashed eight boundaries during his knock, registering a wonderful performance against Aussies, despite the early dismissal of his opening partner Mayank Agarwal.

Agarwal holds the record of highest run-scorer for India on Test debut in Australia. Agarwal had scored 76 runs on their debut against Australia in 2018. Dattu Phadkar, who had scored 51 runs on his debut in Sydney, back in December 1947 is second on the list. Now Gill became the third-highest run-scorer on Test debut for India in Australia.

Gill was included in the playing XI in place of opener Prithvi Shaw. Gill was given an opportunity in the second Test against Australia after Prithvi Shaw’s back to back poor performance on the field.
