Shehan Jayasuriya quits Sri Lanka Cricket, relocates to USA with family

Colombo: Sri Lanka all-rounder Shehan Jayasuriya on Friday (January 8) announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He has decided that he will not be playing for his country anymore and will be relocating to the USA with his family.

A release from the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) read, “National player Shehan Jayasuriya, who represented Sri Lanka in both ODIs and T20I formats have informed SLC, that he will no longer be available for the selection of domestic or international cricket tournaments with immediate effect.”

“Jayasuriya has taken this decision, as he has decided to relocate to the United States of America with his family to settle in that country. Whilst announcing his decision, Shehan thanked Sri Lanka Cricket for the opportunities provided to him, during his time as a national player.”

“SLC whilst thanking Jayasuriya for the services he has rendered to Sri Lanka Cricket as a player, take this opportunity to wish him the very best in his future endeavors,” SLC further added in a statement.

He represented Sri Lanka in ODIs and T20Is. The left-handed batsman played 12 ODIs and scored only 195 runs at an average near 21 and scalped three wickets. In the shorter format of the game, he played 18 matches and scored 241 runs, and bagged 3 wickets.

Jayasuriya managed to make a mark in domestic cricket and played 80 first-class matches, hitting 11 hundreds and taking nine five-wicket hauls. He averaged 42.10 with the bat, and 26.38 with the ball respectively. Recently, he plied his trade for Galle Gladiators in the Lanka Premier League, helping the team to make it to the final. He played in all 10 of the Gladiators’ matches.

Earlier on December 5, 2020, New Zealand all-rounder, Corey Anderson had brought down curtains on his career for New Zealand cricket with immediate effect after he accepted a contract with the upcoming Major League Cricket T20 in the USA. He had signed a three-year deal.
