Mohammedan Sporting make winning return; RPFC, Gokulam get first victories

Kolkata: The opening day of the I-League saw some exciting action with Mohammedan Sporting Club making a winning return to the competition against the newcomers Sudeva FC at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

The Black Panthers, who are returning to the tournament after a gap of seven long years ended their afternoon beating Sudeva 1-0. The debutants played some good football throughout the match but were unable to score while Faisal Ali scored the all-important goal for the Kolkata giants in the second half securing full three points for his side.

Roundglass Punjab FC started their I-league campaign hosting former champions Aizawl FC at the Kalyani Stadium. The home side dominated the game and broke the deadlock in the first half. Ningthoujam Pritam Singh won the ball in a dangerous area up the field before launching a sumptuous long-range drive finding the back of the net ensuring his side’s victory.

Gokulam Kerala FC contested their southern rivals Chennai City FC in an absolute thriller at the Kalyani Stadium with the latter coming out as winners beating the home side 2-1. The match witnessed some good attacking football from both sides creating a number of goalscoring opportunities.

Dennis Antwi opened the scoring for the home side just after the kick-off but Chennai quickly equalised soon after courtesy of Elvedin Skrijelj who converted from the spot. Vijay Nagappan completed his side’s comeback in the half after combining precisely with Demir Avdic before slotting it ensuring full three points for his side.
