Real Madrid move to top of the table, with an emphatic win over Celta Vigo

Madrid : Real Madrid started their new year with three points and moved one point clear at the top of the La Liga table on Sunday (3 January), with a 2-0 win over Celta Vigo at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.

Eduardo Coudet’s men failed to score past Raphael Varane and Nacho, although Sergio Ramos was left out due to stomach illness, with this win Thibaut Courtois claimed his seventh clean sheet of the league season.

Courtois was beaten by a chipped effort from Iago Aspas, although Nacho cleared the goal-bound attempt, Los Blancos momented a rapid counterattack from there and scored the opener within six minutes. The ball found its way to Marco Asensio on the left wing, who crossed it to the far post, and Lucas Vazquez headed the ball in.

Celta appealed for penalty on 28 minutes which was denied by the VAR. The score line was 1-0 for Madrid walking into the halftime break.

On 53 minutes Asensio and Vazquez combined again for a goal, Asensio scored this time as he was assisted by Vazquez, after Luka Modric intercepted a loose pass in midfield and created a counterattack.

With this win Zinedine Zidane’s men have set the rhythm of the league, Atletico Madrid would be looking to regain their top spot yet again as soon as possible.
