Madrid: Real Madrid put in a dominant performance, playing in a new formation beating Getafe to 2-0 in the La Liga. Zinedine Zidane’s team fielded an unusual starting lineup to keep its momentum and closed the points gap with Atlético Madrid to five points, with this win.

With a squad depleted by injuries and suspensions, Zidane was forced to change the team’s formation and use some players out of position. A total of nine players were unavailable for the match at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium, including captain Sergio Ramos, Toni Kroos and Eden Hazard.

Zidane switched to an unusual 3-5-2 formation and gave 20-year-old Marvin Park his first senior start. Two other youth players later entered the game — Víctor Chust and Sergio Arribas.

Karim Benzema scored in the second half on 60 minutes and gave his team the much-needed lead. Mendy increased the lead on 66 minutes by completing a left-side cross by Marcelo, who was playing in a more advanced position.

“It was a different design but it worked out well,” Zidane said. “Taking into consideration the players who were not available, we played a good match. I’m happy. The players adapted very well. We were not used to this new formation but in the end it worked well.”
