Racism enters Tokyo Olympics; Germany walk off in protest

Tokyo: Germany men’s football team left the pitch five minutes before the end of their warm-up game against Honduras on Saturday in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics after defender Jordan Torunarigha was racially abused.

Racism in football has taken a turn for worse and it is baffling how new incidents come up every day. The incident came to light when Torunarigha was abused as the players left the pitch in protest. Both teams were 1-1 that time. Earlier, last week, three English players were subject to online racism after their underwhelming loss against Italy in the Euro 2020 finals.

“The game has ended five minutes early with the score at 1-1. The German players left the pitch after Jordan Torunarigha was racially abused,” the national team tweeted. Former player and current Olympic coach Stephen Kuntz got angered and discontent with the treatment met to his players and stated that it was not an option to stay on the field after the incident.

“When one of our players is racially abused, playing on is not an option,” he said.
However, Honduras stated that it was all a misunderstanding but the Germans were not at all accepting.

Germany will begin their campaign against Brazil in Group D on July 22, while Honduras take on Romania.
