World No.1 Novak Djokovic may miss Australian Open due to anti-vaxx stance

Tokyo: World No.1 Novak Djokovic entered the medal rounds at the Tokyo Olympics defeating local favourite Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-0 in the men’s singles event on Thursday. Aiming for a Golden Slam, the Serbian inched one step closer to the gold, and a victory at the following US Open will make Djokovic the first man in the universe to achieve the feat.

The only tennis player to achieve this feat is Steffi Graf, who won all the four Grand Slams and Olympic gold in the same calendar year in 1988. Djokovic will face Alexander Zverev of Germany. The other semifinal will have Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta playing against ROC’s Karen Khachanov.

Gold in sight for Belinda Bencic

In the women’s singles, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland got better of Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3 on Thursday to reach the final. “In the next match I can be more relaxed because I already have a medal,” Bencic said.

Bencic’s final opponent is the Czeck Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova who defeated Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-1.
