Kuala Lumpur: After the Badminton World Federation (BWF) released its final list of qualifiers on Monday, Chen Long of China would be the only defending champion in any of the five categories at this year’s Tokyo Olympics.
The rescheduled Games, which begin on July 23, would feature 87 men and 86 women from 50 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) from five continental confederations, according to BWF.
Other returning medalists include Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, India’s PV Sindhu, Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara, and Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying. South Korean bronze medalist Shin Seungchan would team up with new partner Lee Sohee in the women’s doubles.
However, unfortunately, defending women’s singles champion Carolina Marin, won’t be there in Tokyo due to a knee injury. The badminton competition at the Tokyo Olympics will take place from July 24 to August 2.
