Kolkata : Mohun Bagan hammered Coal India SPA 5-1 at Mohun Bagan AC Ground in CFL 2026 Super 6 Round.
The Mariners came into Super 6 with 7 wins, 2 losses and as many draws, 3rd place finish in Group A. While, Coal India, playing their first CFL Premier League shocked everyone with Group B top, securing 6 wins, 4 draws and a loss.
Mohun Bagan fielded 7 seniors and got benefited from the result as Manvir Singh scored a brace in first half. Bagan plundered 5 goals inside 44 minutes in first half. Apart from Manvir’s brace, Sahal Abdul Samad, Kiyan Nassiri, Sandeep Malik, all scored goals.
Mohun Bagan started playing aggressively from the start. Liston Colaco had the first chance to score. He could not capitalize on Manvir’s pass. He wasted a free kick in the next minute, five minutes later, he wasted another chance. Liston could not score even through Coal India goalkeeper and captain Sanjoy Kumar Bhattacharya as he came forward and dribbled past Liston.
Coal India also put Mohun Bagan under pressure with counterattacks after surviving repeatedly but Mohun Bagan defense and goal keeper Deeprobhat Ghosh stood tall denying Coal India any goal.
Mohun Bagan scored the first goal in the 20th minute. Manvir, receiving the ball from his teammate, beat the Coal India goalkeeper and put the ball into the net. Five minutes later, Manvir had another chance but could not score. Mohun Bagan scored the second goal in the 33rd minute, Sahal scored with a powerful shot. Mohun Bagan scored three more goals in the remaining minutes of the first half to secure the result of the match.
Sandeep Malik scored Mohun Bagan’s third goal in the 36th minute from a pass from Kiyan Nassiri. Kiyan himself scored the next minute. Manvir scored from the penalty spot three minutes before the end of the first half, when Mohun Bagan was rewarded Penalty due to a foul by Coal India players.
Mohun Bagan’s attacking edge did not decrease even after the break. Manvir could have scored a hat-trick. Two good chances came to Sayan Banerjee. But all didn’t succeed.
In the 74th minute, it was Coal India who equalized with a goal. Sandeep got the ball in his hand inside the box through Irfan Sardar’s kick. In form Irfan scored from the penalty spot with a bullet short.
Despite leading by five goals in the first half, Mohun Bagan could not score any more goals in the second half. The same kind of display was seen throughout the group stage.
With five goals scored in the first half, Mohun Bagan’s play did not show any extra urgency in the second half. Coal India took this advantage and halted Mohun Bagan. The Goal difference which could have improved and solidify the Mariners position in Championship Round points table became a distant dream in the game. On top of that, Mohun Bagan coach Bastab Roy confirmed that Liston Colaco has picked up a hamstring injury in the game and currently recovering.
With in form teams like Bhawanipore, East Bengal, Mohammedan SC yet to play Super 6 games, this 2nd half dismay show after 1st half brilliance could create trouble for Mohun Bagan.
