Manchester City defender to go on trial early next year

Chester: Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy, who was accused of rape and sexual attack on August 26th, will be going on trial in January. He was accused of attacking three different women, one of them being under 18.

The French player just spoke only to confirm his name during a 45-minute hearing at a court in Chester, Northwest England, on Friday(September 10). The attacks were rumored to have taken place at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire.

His trial has been set for January 24, 2022. He has been accused of four counts of rape and one of sexual assault. Three counts of rape were reported to have taken place during October 2020 and the sexual assault allegedly took place this year in January. Meanwhile, He is also charged with a rape case of a woman last month.

The 27-year-old player, who joined Manchester City from Monaco in 2017, only listened to proceedings that were translated to him via a French interpreter who sat behind him in the dock. During the proceeding, charges were not put on him and no pleas were entered. The case was dealt largely with administrative matters ahead of the trial.

A further hearing is scheduled to be held on November 15, 2021, where Eleanor Laws, who has been defending Mendy, would make an application to dismiss the charges on that scheduled date.

He played against Tottenham during the league’s opening weekend. Ever since the charges were pressed, Mendy was refused bail and is currently in a prison in Liverpool. He was also suspended by City as the case is under investigation.
