When Lionel Messi won the 2022 World Cup, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was able to follow in the footsteps of his renowned countryman, Maradona. Much like Maradona did in 1986 in Mexico, Messi motivated his nation to victory in Qatar. Maradona’s final participation at FIFA’s premier tournament, which took place on American soil 29 years ago, has now received a shoutout from Messi.

Many people consider Maradona to be one of the best players to ever play the game. However, Messi has  joined in that category after having a storied career of his own. Maradona, who played 91 times for Argentina, died in November 2020 at the age of 60.

Messi, who continues to represent the Albiceleste and is up to 103 goals through 175 appearances, has suggested that he will not be gracing another World Cup – with the finals set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico in 2026. The 36-year-old, who is currently with MLS team Inter Miami, plays club football in America. has said: “I think not. This was my last World Cup. I’ll see how things go, but not in principle, I won’t go to the next World Cup.”
