Barcelona : Lionel Messi officially became a free agent after his contract with FC Barcelona expired at the end of June 2021. The Argentine talisman of the Catalan side, was expected to sign a contract renewal but the failing of which now makes him free to sign for any club he wants to.

Although, Barcelona still believe that the 34 year old will eventually sign the renewal. Messi is currently in Brazil focused on his national duties. As Argentina advanced to the quarter finals of Copa America 2021. The existing contract between the two had a deadline on June 30, 2021. The expiry of which makes him currently unattached.

In addition Messi wants a competitive squad, having missed out of UEFA Champions League trophy for the last few seasons and the La Liga trophy for the last couple of season. Messi becoming a free agent agent adds on to the complexity of the situation. If Messi had to be resigned, he would have to be registered with La Liga as a new signing.

The problem with the La Liga’s financial sketch will arise then, Javier Tebas has already warned the Catalan side to lower their wage structure in order to resign Lionel Messi ahead of the next season.

The two parties, are rumored to be constantly in touch and FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta firmly believes Messi would stay at the club as eventually everything fall back into the place. But the events of last years have created quite some panic among the fans and management.

“It’s going well, he wants to stay and we’re making all the efforts to ensure he does. But we have to balance it with financial fair play,” Laporta told to Spanish media. “There are many options and we’re contemplating which is the best for both parties. But we want him to stay and so does he, we want to give him the most competitive team possible.”
