Kolkata: FC Barcelona Femenino continued their impressive start to the 2026-27 Liga F campaign with a dominant 4-0 win at home to Sevilla FC at the Estadio Jesús Navas on Saturday, September 5, as Esmee Brugts, Clàudia Pina, Marta Torrejón and Vicky López scored to secure all three points for Pere Romeu’s side. The Catalan giants dominated large spells of the match, and converted their superiority into four goals in the process, despite the hosts defending a compact shape. Sevilla were aware ahead of the encounter that they would have to be clinical in possession to nullify the hosts’ threat. Head coach David Losada had warned his charges during the week that they would have to remain disciplined when not in possession in order to make the most of their transition opportunities.
“We have to play a perfect defensive game, they are going to force us to be in a low block, and we must have that lucidity when we have the ball and make good transitions… The day I wake up thinking I cannot score points, I will retire, that is how I have conveyed it to my players,” said David Losada, head coach of Sevilla FC
His plan did not last for long as Barcelona managed to gain control straight away and broke the deadlock in the 9 th minute, Esmee Brugts scoring from a Caroline Graham Hansen cross. The Norwegian winger was a threat throughout the game, consistently cutting inside from the right flank and tormenting the visitors’ backline.
The opener forced Sevilla into spending even more time in their own half, which is exactly what Losada feared. Barcelona were patient in the final third, waiting for a gap to appear between their opponents’ midfield and defence to strike.
Barcelona extended their lead in first-half stoppage time, Clàudia Pina scoring in the second minute of stoppage time to make it 2-0 to the home side. Pina, once again heavily involved in the action, gave the visitors a two-goal advantage going into halftime.
Sevilla were struggling to cope with the new situation as soon as the game restarted. Marta Torrejón made it 3-0 in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time, according to the official match timeline, putting Barcelona in total control and depriving the home team of any hope.
The scoreboard displayed the visitors’ quality in the first half, as they were able to turn their dominance in possession into goals. Graham Hansen was a constant threat, scoring three of the team’s goals and constantly stretching the Sevilla defence. Her crosses and ability to get past defenders opened up the Seville back five for her teammates.
Sevilla tried to reduce the damage after the break, but Barcelona continued to threaten. Vicky López scored the opener for Spain’s third-placed side in the 55th minute, marking another important milestone in her development as a key player for coach Romeu. The 20-year-old has been playing more regularly for the Catalan giants since the departure of club legend Alexia Putellas and the goal was a timely statement of intent.
For Romeu, it was another example of Barcelona’s ability to deal with different opponents on different days. Sevilla had been very different to their opening day opponents and it took a while for the visitors to find a way through.
“Every opponent is different, but we are also playing away. Sevilla is a cheerful team, with a lot of interior play, that does not give up the ball and has high-quality players in the middle,” Barcelona head coach Pere Romeu said before the match.
Barcelona were too strong. After an opening 5-0 league win against Costa Adeje Tenerife, the 4-0 Sevilla win takes the champions to nine goals scored in their opening two La Liga fixtures without conceding.
Sevilla will regroup after their first defeat of the campaign. While Losada’s charges showed the defensive discipline with which they had hoped would keep the score close for stretches, the Catalan giants quality in the final third eventually made the difference.
It was another statement start for Barcelona at the business end of their title defence, being efficient in front of goal, dominant in possession and able to find different match-winners as and when required.
