La Liga: Real clinch Madrid Derby; Osasuna Hold Barcelona

Madrid: Real Madrid clinched the derby with a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu on Monday (December 13). FC Barcelona however were held to a 2-2 draw against Osasuna at El Sadar Stadium in La Liga.

Benzema struck on 16th minutes giving the lead to the Los Blancos, he volleyed Vinicius Junior’s cross past Jan Oblak for his 13th league goal of the season.

Atletico started brightly as well, Thibaut Courtois had some early work to do when smothered a Marcos Llorente’s cross with Matheus Cunha, he picked it ahead of Luis Suarez in Atletico’s attack who was waiting to pounce on it. Since then Real took control.

However, the visitors improved after half-time but Marco Asensio finished home a counter attack on the 57th minute mark to confirm the 10th consecutive win for Real across all competitions.
“To win a derby is very important to our fans and I bet they left the stadium really happy,” Asensio told reporters.

“Vinicius is playing really well, we are delighted with his progression this season. He is doing it all, scoring, assisting. We are all happy for him.”

Nico Gonzalez and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli scored their first ever career goals for FC Barcelona, although it was not enough for the Catalans to earn the three points. Gonzalez scored after just 12 minutes. The 19-year-old youngster was one-on-one with  Sergio Herrera and calmly slotted the ball past him.

Osasuna equalized within two minutes as David Garcia scored a superb freekick. Xavi’s men went ahead when Ezzalzouli scored from a counter attack. What looked like a victory for Barcelona, was spoiled  when Avila scored a late goal on the 85th minute mark to give Osasuna a draw.
