London: New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson heaped praise on Indian counterpart Virat Kohli and his boys terming India a ‘formidable’ side. One of the true sportsmen of the game, Williamson also stated that the one-off finale never really depicts the whole picture.

New Zealand beat India by eight wickets in the rain-affected World Test Championship (WTC) final in Southampton to win the inaugural edition last week and bagged the winning amount of Rs 12 crore along with Test Championship Mace.

“As we know, this Indian team is a formidable side. It’s a great side and we are proud to achieve a win in this match but it doesn’t take away anything from the fact that how strong they are and what quality they have. The set-up provides excitement. One-off final, it never really tells the whole picture,” Williamson was quoted as saying to India Today.

Williamson’s remark came after Kohli’s comment regarding the best Test team through a one-off finale. “I am not in absolute agreement of deciding the best Test side in the world over the course of one game,” Kohli stated at the WTC final post-match press conference.

Williamson said he has no doubts that the current Indian team will go on to win plenty of more matches in the future. While lauding the team he termed the pace attack and seam bowling department by calling them ‘relentless’.

“No doubt they will win plenty more, you know their quality. They are relentless, they have a pace-attack which is the best in the world, incredible spin bowlers and batting need no mention. The depth that they have created,” the 30-year-old added.

Williamson stated the Indian players as great ambassadors of the sport. He also said he simply loves the kind of passion fans have for their national side. “Emotion that a country brings for sport, we can all appreciate having India and their passion is rewarding. They (players) hold themselves as ambassadors of the game,” he added.
