Tokyo: There are several households in the universe that boasts multiple Olympic medallists. On Sunday, first time in history, an Olympic Games saw a pair of siblings take home gold – Japan’s Hifumi Abe and his sister Uta Abe triumphing in the men’s 66kg and women’s 52kg judo events respectively.
In the semifinals, Uta defeated Italy’s Odette Giuffrida by a waza-ari, while France’s Amandine Buchard was quick (16 seconds) to down Fabienne Kocher of Switzerland for an ippon. In the final, the 21-year-old Uta trounced Buchard by an ippon in golden score additional time.

Giuffrida shared the bronze medal with British Chelsie Giles – first for the country at Tokyo Olympics. In the men’s semis, Hifumi defeated Brazilian Daniel Cargnin to set up a summit clash with Vazha Margvelashvili of Georgia who saw off South Korea’s An Baul by a waza-ari.
In the final, the Japanese claimed the top of the podium finish by a waza-ari in regular time, joining his sister. An Baul and Cargnin thus shared third place in the category.
