ISL 2023-24: Shankarlal Chakraborty joins Punjab FC as assistant coach

Kolkata : AFC Pro License holder, coach Shankarlal Chakraborty has joined Indian Super League debutant Punjab FC as assistant coach.

As per reports, the Indian tactician is now at the team base and has joined the coaching department led by Staikos Vergetis.

As per sources close to the team’s development, “Punjab FC sealed the transfer on the deadline day by paying an undisclosed transfer fee to FC Bengaluru United for obtaining the service of Sankarlal Chakraborty”.

The mighty Indian tactician

Born in December 1975, Sankarlal Chakraborty had an well furnished playing career. Graduated from the TATA football academy he perfected his game as a midfielder. Chakraborty had spent his senior playing career for both the Kolkata giants – Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. Later he upgraded himself as a football coach.

Suffering a major injury during his playing days, he was forced to retire from the game. However, he tried to register a comeback after recovering but couldn’t deliver at his best. Chakraborty left the pitch as a player in the 2002-03 season, signing off from East Bengal FC.

As a coach, Shankarlal had a magnificent career. With the experience of coaching India’s one of the biggest clubs Mohun Bagan. Joining the Green and Maroon as an assistant coach and was later promoted to the role of a head coach in 2018. There he managed the Mariners in Calcutta Football League 2018, to clinch the club’s major trophy after a long gap. He also has coaching experience for Bhawanipore FC, Sudeva Delhi and Bengaluru United.

Debutant Punjab FC

Punjab FC became the first Indian team to secure promotion to the top flight of Indian football after winning the I-League 2022-23. Staikos Vergetis, their head coach, is doing a great job preparing the team for their inaugural ISL season.

In terms of players, Punjab FC has signed four promising young players: midfielders Amarjit Singh Kiyam, Leon Augustine, and Prasanth K. Mohan, and defender Melroy Assisi. Nikhil Prabhu, a defender, joined Punjab FC after making his Indian Super League debut with Odisha FC last season and later moved to FC Goa for the second half of the season. He will be joined by Tejas Krishna, a defender who played for the Kerala Blasters reserves.
