ISL 2021-22: Jamshedpur FC edge past ATK Mohun Bagan to clinch maiden shield

Panjim: Owen Coyle’s Jamshedpur FC held Juan Ferrando’s ATK Mohun Bagan in 1-0  win  to secure the adequate  three points  to get their hands on the Indian Super League 2021-22 Winners Shield for the first time.  Despite numerous efforts from the Mariners they stay at the third position lacking six  points from all the games. Forward Ritwik Das scored the sole goal, that helped the Men of Steel in reaching the milestone.

The game was a title decider in true sense in the terms of game quality as well as in the terms of tension between the side. The first proper chance came for the Kolkata side as early as the 13th minute through the likes of Joni Kauko and Subhashish Bose, where latter misses the target by some inches . Custodian Amrinder Singh makes a huge flying save to keep ATK Mohun Bagan in the game in the early minutes. Some other efforts made Roy Krishna and Kauko were brilliantly tackled of by Peter Hartley who kept on averting the dangers. Although both the teams had a lot of goal mouth action, they went into the break with the scored tied at 0-0.

Coming from the break, Jamshedpur FC continued their dominance as their found their much anticipated break through in the 56th minute through Ritwik Das. Greg Stewart made a sublime run, dribbling past the ATKMB defenders testing Amrinder. The rebound fell onto the foot of Das who slot it right past custodian. The foreigner was earlier announced to be the player of the month of February. Stewart was the only player in the campaign to be involved in 10+ goals and assists.

 

Despite the trail, the Mariners pushed for the equalizer testing TP Rehenesh for quite sometime. However the likes of Hartley and Eli Sabia put continuous efforts in averting the dangers. Finnish start, Kauko came closest to scoring the equalizer in the 72 minute when his long attempt missed th shot by a close distance. His attempt was followed by Ashutosh Mehta’s beautifully set up ball, which was cleared by Hartley as well.

Rehenesh and co. got past their biggest concern, when the custodian denied Liston Colaco’s freekick in the 85th minute. Earlier, coach Ferrando introduced derby hero Kiyan Nassiri to add some fresh legs into the game. Despite numerous desperate efforts, Ferrando’s men could not find their way in stopping Owen Coyle’s Jamshedpur FC from getting the shield. Skipper Peter Hartley was adjudjed the Man of the Match.

With the win and a total of 43 points from 20 games, Jamshedpur FC get their hands on the maiden ISL Winners Shield. While Hyderabad FC, ATK Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters join them in the play off as they set their eyes on a domestic double.
