KOLKATA, APRIL 17, 2026: Punjab Kings (PBKS) sealed a convincing victory by 7 wickets (with 21 balls left) over Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 23rd match of IPL 2026 at Wankhede. With Prabhsimran and skipper Shreyas Iyer brilliantly dismantling the MI bowlers, PBKS moved to the top of the table as the only unbeaten and dominant team so far this season. On the other side, MI faced their fourth defeat in five matches. The match began with PBKS winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. For the opening, Quinton de Kock came in along with Ryan Rickelton due to the injury of Rohit Sharma. De Kock was playing his first match of the season. The start of the innings became critical for MI in the 3rd over when Arshdeep Singh delivered his second over, removing Ryan Rickelton (2 off 8 balls), and on the very next ball dismissing Suryakumar Yadav for a golden duck. With that, Arshdeep also claimed his 100th IPL wicket. The score was 12/2 in 3 overs. Naman Dhir progressed in the top order along with De Kock, building an excellent and indispensable partnership of 122 runs, which revived MI’s momentum. Naman Dhir scored a brilliant 50 off 31 balls before being dismissed. De Kock produced a magnificent century, remaining unbeaten on 112 off 60 balls, smashing 8 fours and 7 sixes. This was a key contribution that helped MI reach a competitive total, also marking his third IPL century for three different franchises. After the strong partnership between Naman Dhir and De Kock, the rest of the batting order didn’t contribute much. Skipper Hardik Pandya came in and got out after scoring 14 off 12 balls, courtesy of an absolutely stunning catch by Shreyas Iyer—one of the best grabs of the season so far. In the slog overs, due to quick wickets falling, MI were unable to cross 200, which once seemed possible. They ended with 195 runs, setting a target for PBKS.

The second innings started aggressively, with Prabhsimran and Priyansh Arya smashing Deepak Chahar in the very first over. After an expensive start, Allah Ghazanfar took two wickets, dismissing Priyansh Arya (15) and Cooper Connolly (17), attempting to bring MI back into the match. After the powerplay, PBKS were 61/2.

Prabhsimran Singh and skipper Shreyas Iyer then built a match-winning partnership of 139 runs. Prabhsimran played an outstanding unbeaten knock of 80 off 39 balls, while Iyer delivered a superb captain’s innings of 66 off 35 balls, brilliantly dismantling the MI bowling attack, including Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Shardul Thakur. Shardul eventually took Iyer’s wicket in the 16th over, but by then the damage had already been done. Marcus Stoinis finished the innings off with two back-to-back boundaries, as PBKS reached 198 in just 16.3 overs, with 21 balls remaining. MI’s bowling attack looked in trouble—Jasprit Bumrah has not taken any wickets this season so far and conceded 41 runs in 4 overs. Pandya gave away 39 runs in 3 overs, Shardul Thakur conceded 42 in 3 overs, and Deepak Chahar leaked 45 runs in 2.3 overs.

With this victory, PBKS moved to the top of the table with 9 points from 5 matches. On the other hand, the five-time champions MI suffered their fourth consecutive loss and are placed second from the bottom with just 2 points. It is important for MI to bounce back as early as possible. PBKS will face LSG on 19th April, while MI will take on GT on 20th April. Whether PBKS can continue their unbeaten run will be interesting to watch.
