Kolkata: Faf du Plessis has been named the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of the IPL 2022 season. Virat Kohli declared last season that he will step down as captain at the end of the IPL 2021 season. RCB purchased South Africa batsman Faf du Plessis for Rs 7 crore at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, the RCB team management had three captaincy options: Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, India’s Dinesh Karthik, or re-appointing Virat Kohli.

Expressing his delight on being appointed as RCB captain, Faf du Plessis said, “The opportunity to be the captain of a franchise like RCB is massive and a role I was glad to accept. The work is just going to begin as we try to build off the success the team has enjoyed in previous years. I would like to thank RCB management and the coaching team for entrusting me with the role and I will do my best to ensure a successful season this time with the desired outcome.”

CSK released a number of players, including Faf du Plessis. When everyone expected CSK to go all out for the South African cricketer, Royal Challengers Bangalore won the bidding war for his services. Faf was a key player for Chennai Super Kings in the previous edition of the IPL. In the 2021 season, the right-handed batter made 633 runs and finished as the tournament’s second-best run-scorer.
