The Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team ended their 4 Nations Tournament campaign on a high note, defeating Australia 2-1 in a thrilling third-place playoff held in Berlin. After a goalless first half, India came from behind to seal the win with goals from Rohit and Ajeet Yadav, securing a morale-boosting finish to the competition.
The playoff match began with both India and Australia showcasing tight defensive strategies, preventing any scoring in the first two quarters. Each side struggled to break through the other’s structured setup, resulting in limited circle entries and no clear goal-scoring chances. The deadlock reflected the intensity of the contest, with both teams desperate to avoid finishing at the bottom. The breakthrough finally came in the 40th minute, when Australian captain Toby Mallon broke the silence with a sharp field goal, putting his side ahead 1-0. However, the lead was short-lived. India replied swiftly through a penalty corner conversion by Rohit in the 45th minute, drawing level and shifting the momentum of the game.
India’s renewed energy and attacking intent became evident in the fourth quarter. As the pressure mounted, the Indian forwards pressed hard, creating more opportunities. Their efforts bore fruit in the 52nd minute when Ajeet Yadav scored a brilliant field goal, handing India the lead. Despite late attempts from Australia to equalise, India held firm defensively to protect their one-goal advantage until the final whistle.
With this 2-1 win, India secured third place in the tournament, capping off a rollercoaster campaign. The team began their journey with a heavy 1-7 loss to hosts Germany, then bounced back by defeating Australia 3-1 in the group stage, before suffering a 1-5 loss to Spain. Though inconsistent, the young Indian side showed resilience, particularly in their strong comeback against Australia. The performance of players like Rohit and Ajeet Yadav will offer hope for the future, as India prepares for larger challenges on the international junior circuit
