Kolkata: AIFF announced that India will be hosting five times FIFA World Cup champion Brazil at Kolkata for a historic international friendly on October 3, 2026.
Brazil are the most successful men’s national team in football. India will host the Seleção at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in one of the biggest matches in Indian football history. The fixture will mark the highest-ranked opposition India have faced since the FIFA World Ranking was introduced in 1992, with Brazil currently ranked fifth.
Brazil’s legacy has inspired generations of footballers across the world, including millions of passionate supporters in India. India is known for having one of the largest Brazilian fan bases outside of Brazil.
M Satyanarayan, AIFF Deputy Secretary General, said, “To welcome a team of Brazil’s stature to our country is an extraordinary moment and one that will undoubtedly become a landmark chapter in the history of Indian football.”
Subrata Paul, Director, National Teams, said, “For our national team players, this is far more than just another match. It is a rare opportunity to test themselves against one of the greatest footballing nations the game has ever known. Experiences like these challenge players to grow, inspire them to dream bigger, and leave memories that stay with them throughout their careers.”
The decision was also announced at Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium during Mohun Bagan Day ceremony by AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey and West Bengal Sports Minister Dr Indranil Khan.
The announcement brings an end to days of speculation over Brazil’s proposed visit to India. Earlier reports from ESPN Brasil had suggested that the CBF was in advanced talks to stage a friendly in Kolkata, although the opposition had not been finalised at the time.
Discussions between the CBF and Indian stakeholders reportedly began during the FIFA World Cup 2026. Brazil’s interest in playing in India gathered momentum after its World Cup campaign received overwhelming support from Indian fans, with packed screenings, murals and celebrations across the country going viral on social media.
“The Brazilian National Team’s schedule continues. After the friendlies in Australia, our next destination will be India, where we will write an unprecedented chapter in our history. On October 3, the National Team will take the field for the first time on Indian soil, at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. It will be a special encounter with a country that hosts the largest international fanbase of the Brazilian National Team and that, for generations, has followed the history of Brazilian football with immense affection and passion. We are eager to live this moment alongside millions of Indian fans! See you in Kolkata,” the CBF said in a statement.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) also confirmed the fixture. “A date for the history books. India vs Brazil FIFA International Friendly at Salt Lake Stadium on October 3,” the AIFF posted on its official X handle.
Led by Marquinhos , featuring stars like Vinicius Jr, Cunha, Brazil will arrive in India after playing two previously announced friendlies against Australia in Queensland on September 25 and 29.
The friendly comes months after Brazil’s FIFA World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 16. Despite that disappointment, the Selecao’s popularity remains immense in India, especially in Kolkata, where the city’s streets were once again draped in Brazil’s iconic yellow and green during the tournament.
Brazil’s past encounters with India
Previously, India’s women’s team played Brazil in a four-nation friendly tournament in Manaus in 2021 — Manisha Kalyan, became the only Indian Footballer to score a goal against Brazil senior team, which was an iconic one in India’s 6-1 defeat. The match also marked the final official appearance and retirement celebration for legendary Brazilian player Formiga, who received tributes from both squads.
In 2016 BRICS U17 World Cup, Brazil and India U17 teams faced each other where Brazil won 3-1. Komal Thatal scored for India in that match. Vinicius Jr scored in 82nd minute for Brazil in that game at GMC Athletic Stadium, Bambolin.
Again in 2022 U17 Women’s World Cup both teams faced each other where India faced 5-0 defeat at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvaneshwar.
Brazil and their long Kolkata connection
Kolkata and Brazil’s connection dates back to decades. In 1977, Pele visited Kolkata with New York Cosmos to face Mohun Bagan in a match at Eden Gardens. It was a 2-2 draw. This game also featured players like Carlos Alberto and Giorgio Chinaglia who scored both goals. Over 80,000 spectators attended the event in heavy rain. Shyama Thapa and Md Habib scored for Mohun Bagan. This game displayed the love and passion of fans, where PK Banerjee coached Mariners stopped Pele. The Brazilian, who led the Selecao to three World Cup titles, was in his final year as a professional footballer when the three-day Indian tour came about. So the football-crazy people of Kolkata lapped up the opportunity and did everything to get a glimpse of the man who they have mostly seen on television or in the pages of sports magazines.
“Lakhs of people gathered outside the Dum Dum Airport to greet the Brazilian legend. There were also teeming crowds outside his hotel in central Kolkata, waiting to catch a glimpse of the only man who had won three World Cups for his team,” football historian Novy Kapadia recounted the incident in his book, Barefoot to Boots.
Pele returned once again in 2015 as a chief guest for Subroto Cup. During this visit, he participated in an event celebrating his upcoming 75th birthday alongside then West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and composer A.R. Rahman. He also joined an onstage interactive chat with legendary Indian Cricketer “Prince of Calcutta” Sourav Ganguly at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. He was also a special guest in ISL 2015 clash between Atletico De Kolkata and Kerala Blasters.
Full strength Brazilian squad to arrive in India?
However, it is only now that the Selecao will feature at the iconic football amphitheatre where against Venezuela in 2011, Lionel Messi led Argentina for the first time. Brazil is expected to travel with full squad coached by Carlos Ancelotti, featuring stars like Vinicius Jr, Marquinhos, Rodrygo, Cunha, Endrick, etc in action.
“Brazil will come with their full squad (unless anyone gets injured). As things stand, that is the information we have. Carlo Ancelotti is also expected to come,” assured former India goalkeeper and current national football team director, Subrata Paul. Another top AIFF official also echoed the same.
Paul revealed that negotiations over the friendly were ongoing for a considerable period before gathering pace early this year and continuing for about seven months.
“The discussions began this year and have been going on for around seven months. It has been a long process. With a team such as Brazil, the schedule is usually fixed well in advance, so arranging a match of this scale takes time,” said Paul.
Important exposure for Indian Footballers
For the Indian players, this match will be about far more than the result as it offers them a rare chance to test themselves against one of international football’s strongest sides.
“We have complete faith in our players. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. India have never played against the senior Brazil national team, so whoever gets the chance to play in this match will experience something special said Paul before adding, “It will be a dream come true for them. Imagine standing on the pitch as an India player, singing the national anthem with the Brazilian team beside you. You do not need any additional motivation for a match like this. You are representing your country against Brazil.”
India will enter the contest as clear underdogs, but Paul said the players should approach it as they would any other football match.
“At the end of the day, it is a football match, and it will be 11 against 11. Our players know the size of the occasion, and we have full faith in them. Playing against a team of Brazil’s quality will be a major opportunity for them to learn and improve,” he explained.
Can Argentina come next in India?
Paul said India have gradually begun facing stronger opponents, pointing to their recent matches against Canada, Jamaica and Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup.
“Our standard of opposition has improved. We recently played teams such as Canada, Jamaica and Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup. Facing stronger teams is important for our development.
“Playing Brazil, however, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If we continue arranging matches of this stature, perhaps other leading teams, including Argentina, could also come in the future. Playing against top teams will help India improve.”
The Brazil friendly, however, may not be a one-off event. “We have made several plans, and we are thinking big. People often asked why Brazil or other major teams did not come to India. Now Brazil are coming. This is not necessarily where it ends. There are plans for the future, but I cannot reveal everything because of protocol. More details will become clear in time.”
“I am extremely excited that Brazil are coming to India, particularly Kolkata. We all know that the city is divided between Brazil and Argentina supporters, but that does not matter,” Paul said.
“When Brazil arrive, they will understand the level of support they have here. Kolkata is like a mini Brazil. The passion for Brazilian football in this city is extraordinary.”
Tickets likely to be expensive
The opportunity to watch Brazil’s leading stars could, however, come at a substantial cost. An AIFF official admitted that “ticket prices will be high”.
The federation is yet to announce the ticketing details. With Brazil playing in India for the first time and the Salt Lake Stadium expected to attract supporters from across the country, demand is likely to be high.
