India script history at the stroke of midnight hour, conquer maiden ODI World Cup title

Navi Mumbai : India defeated South Africa by 52 runs at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai in ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 Final, to secure maiden World Cup title.

Batting first, Indian openers Smriti Mandhana (45) & Shafali Verma (87) put up 104 runs opening stand. Even after Smriti’s dismissal, Shafali continued her brilliance, building important stand along with Jemimah Rodrigues (24).

However, after Shafali’s dismissal, India lost their way, slowed down and continued to lose wickets. Deepti Sharma (58) held from one end scoring important half century and was well accompanied by Richa Ghosh (34) to reach 298 runs in 50 overs.

Chasing 299 runs, South African captain Laura Wolvaart (101) continued fighting from one end scoring century even after losing continuous wickets from other end. Whenever South Africa kept going either of Indian bowlers like Shafali , Deepti gave important breakthroughs and turned the game in India’s favour.

However, all went in vain as after her dismissal in 41st over , South Africa lost their way and were bundled on 246 runs. Deepti Sharma picked 5 wickets to seal the deal for India.

Shafali was awarded Player of the Match, while Deepti Sharma secured Player of the tournament with 215 runs and 22 wickets.
