Kolkata : India’s squad for the Women’s World Cup was unveiled on Tuesday, with Harmanpreet Kaur set to captain the side and Smriti Mandhana named as her deputy. Notably, Shafali Verma, regarded as one of the most explosive match-winners in white-ball cricket, has been left out of the 15-member squad.
The tournament, set to be hosted by India offers the team a golden opportunity to create history under Harmanpreet Kaur. It starts from September 30, with India locking horns with Sri Lanka.
“Personally this tournament is very important for me. This is a home World Cup. Home World Cups for special for every player. I have a lot of experience batting at No.4, I am just looking to contribute to the team,” Harmanpreet told reporters on Tuesday.
The team has strong lineup with Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Renuka Singh Thakur, Sneh Rana, Arundhati Reddy, etc among the known and experienced faces.
India reached final of ICC WC 2017 and were narrowly defeated by England. The Women in blue haven’t yet won any trophy, but would like to create history at home ground this year.
