India will play West Indies in three ODIs and three T20Is.

Ahmedabad: Indian men’s cricket team are all set to create history as they will become the first team to play 1000 One Day Internationals when Rohit Sharma and his men face West Indies on Sunday in Ahmedabad.

“We are all set to host the West Indies Tour of India ODI Series 2022. The 1st ODI on the 6th of Feb will be a very special and historic match as India will be playing its 1000th ODI. The Indian team will be the first cricket team in the world to achieve this feat,” Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) tweeted.

Rohit Sharma will return from injury to lead India in this unique match. India played their first ODI match in 1974 against England at Headingley under Ajit Wadekar’s leadership. Sourav Ganguly led India in the 500th ODI while MS Dhoni led India in the 700th, 800th and 900th match.

India has played 999 ODIs so far, followed by Australia and Pakistan with 958 and 936 ODIs respectively. Sri Lanka are in fourth place way behind with 867 while West Indies have played 831. In the 999 ODIs, India has a win percentage of 54.71. They have won 518, lost 431, tied nine and 41 have ended in no results.

The first ODI against South Africa in Boland Park at Paarl would have been Team India’s 1000th game, but with the postponement of the ODI tour to New Zealand previous year only meant that the world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad would get the honour to host the historical match.

“It is a matter of great pride for us to be hosting the landmark match. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is the largest in the world, and hosting India’s 1000th ODI match will add another feather in the cap,” Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) joint secretary Anil Patel told Sportstar.

The ODI series will begin on February 6, the second ODI match will be played on February 9 and the third and final one will be played on February 11. After the ODIs, the two teams are scheduled to play a three-match T20 International series in Kolkata. Which will begin on February 16, the second T20I match will be played on February 18 and the third and final one will be played on February 20. The entire T20I series will be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
