T20 World Cup: Ireland beat Netherlands; Sri Lanka breeze past Namibia

Abu Dhabi: Sri Lanka got their ICC World T20 campaign underway registering a dominating 7 wicket victory over Namibia in Group A at the Sheikh Zyed Stadium on Monday. The Lankans bundled the minnows Namibia out for a mere 96 thanks to some splendid bowling before chasing down the target in 13.3 overs convincingly.

Namibia was no match to their opponents and it looked evident right from the word go after they were asked to bat. Apart from Craig Williams(29), skipper Gerhard Erasmus(20) and JJ Smit(12) none were able to get into double digits with former two stitching 39 run stand, the highest in their innings.

The Lankan bowling prowess was lead by youngsters Maheesh Theekshana(3/25) and Wahidu Hasaranga(2/26) topping the charts. In reply, Sri Lanka scored 100/3 with Bhauka Rajapaksha hammering an unbeaten 27 ball 42 who supported by Avishka Fernando(30 not-out)to seal the deal.

In the first game of the day though, Ireland registered a 7 wicket victory over Netherlands at the same venue. The Irish side eased their through to 107/3 in 15.1 overs after they packed the Dutch home for 106.

Opener Max ODowd(51)was the top scorer for the Netherlands with a fighting half century while skipper Pieter Seeler(21) also contributed handy runs however it was Ireland who to went through their line up thanks to some good bowling from Curtis Campher(4/26) and Mark Adair(3/9).

In Reply, Gareth Delany(45) and opener Paul Sterling(30) powered the Irish chase getting to the target with much ease.
