ICC T20 WC 2026: Zimbabwe qualify for Super 8, Australia eliminated

Kolkata : Zimbabwe have qualified for Super 8 of ICC T20 WC 2026 , after rain washed out their game against Ireland at Pallekele.

After their victories over Oman and Australia, Zimbabwe needed just a point to secure qualification, and with persistent rain in Pallekele, the match was abandoned without a toss. The game was called off at 5:30pm local time, two and a half hours after the scheduled start. The washout also guarantees Australia’s elimination after their defeat to Sri Lanka on Monday night left them stranded on 2 points.

Well before the game was due to begin, blue covers shielded the entirety of the Pallekele square and the rest of the ground. There were large puddles forming on the covers, and though the rain was never torrential, a persistent drizzle meant the groundstaff were largely reduced to the role of drying out the covers periodically.

Zimbabwe will enter a group that also features India, West Indies and South Africa, with the top two going through to the semi-finals. Ireland, who also had a brief chance at qualification with the win, will exit the tournament.

It is the first time Zimbabwe have progressed to the Super Eight stage of a World Cup, two years after they didn’t qualify for the event itself in 2024. Missing out on the 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups was one thing, but being the only Full Member not to participate in an expanded 20-team T20 World Cup in 2024, even losing to Uganda, was nothing sort of embarrassing. Some saw it as the death knell for a game that had been on life support for two decades.

The Zimbabwean fans were dancing in the stands of Pallekele, as not only they qualified for Super 8 but also received direct spot in 2028 edition.

What their team has achieved in Sri Lanka is the stuff no one dreamed of, especially after what they have been through over the last few years of lean.

Zimbabwe will take Australia’s seeded place (X2) in the Super Eight, which means they will play West Indies in Mumbai on February 23, India in Chennai on February 26, and South Africa in Delhi on March 01.

It is the first time Australia have been knocked out of a World Cup at the group stage, in either the T20 or ODI formats, since 2009. Their only victory was over Ireland.

Although out of contention for the Super Eight, Australia do not exit the tournament yet – they still have a dead rubber against Oman to play in Pallekele on Friday. Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka also play each other in Colombo on Thursday.
