Kolkata : With Indian Super League 2026 season coming at final stage, the Bengal greats – East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giants are prime contenders for the title.
After the thrilling Kolkata Derby ended in 1-1 draw, East Bengal now have an upper hand , topping the table with 23 points, and superior Goal Difference (18) to that of their rival Mohun Bagan’s (13), placed at number 2 with 23 points.
After a rusty later half where they lost points against FC Goa, Inter Kashi, East Bengal in ISL 2026 despite starting the tournament with dominance, Mohun Bagan’s fate is no longer in their hands. They will now have to expect that anyhow Inter Kashi hold East Bengal on May 21 like they did against Mohun Bagan. Mohun Bagan then only have to win against SC Delhi on the same date at Yuva Bharati Kriangan, and will bag the title, as in that case, the Mariners will finish on 27 points and East Bengal on 24 (in case of draw).
If the Mariners end up drawing against Delhi, then they’ll have to hope that Inter Kashi pull off a miracle to defeat superior East Bengal.
If both teams win, Mohun Bagan will have to do it with margin of above 6-0 against Delhi, and hope East Bengal defeat Inter Kashi 1-0, the narrowest of all. If both teams lose , the title race will be wide open for other teams like Jamshedpur FC and Punjab FC.
Any thing opposite of the above results, East Bengal will clinch the ISL title for the first time. Although looks a bit unreal, Mohun Bagan are mathematically still in contention.
